Howard A. Katz, D.D.S.

Dr. Katz received his bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Maryland and did his graduate studies in Comparative Pathology at the National Institutes of Health. He then entered Howard University School of Dentistry and received his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1980. Dr. Katz then completed a two year residency at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

In 1982, Dr Katz began his full time private practice incorporating dentistry and anesthesia for special needs patients. He was then hired as an anesthesia consultant for the Johns Hopkins Program for the International Education of Gynecology and Obstetrics, where he provided clinical and didactic education to physicians in developing countries including: Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Kenya, Nepal and Tanzania.

In 1984, Dr. Katz became an anesthesiology evaluator for the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners, providing in office inspections for the State of Maryland to certify dental offices which can safely provide anesthesia services.

Dr. Katz has two children and lives on a small farm in Lutherville, Maryland with a host of animals including, dogs, cats, goats, chickens, ducks and honeybees. He is an avid photographer and beekeeper, who also enjoys woodworking, playing guitar and car mechanics.

John Gierlach, B.D.S.

Dr, Gierlach has spent his life caring for the dental health of children, adolescents and adult patients with special needs.

After earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, he moved to Australia where he earned his degree in dental surgery. In 1979, Dr. Gierlach returned to the University of Maryland to complete his certification in Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Gierlach then reentered a fellowship in developmental disabilities at the Johns Hopkins University Kennedy Krieger Institute in 1981.

He was then appointed Assistant Director of the Dental Division of the Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Since 1987, he has worked with Dr. Katz specializing in dentistry for children and the developmentally disabled.

Dr. Gierlach lives in Westminster, Maryland with his wife and daughter and enjoys traveling, gardening, fishing and reading.
